Who says you can’t go back in time? New Century College (NCC) offers NCC and CHSS alumni the opportunity to return to college for a day for an NCC Learning Community event that offers a series of interactive, experiential learning-based activities intended to advance personal and professional development.

“NCC has added so many exciting new programs to what was already a strong and proven curriculum,” says NCC Associate Dean Nance Lucas. “We want our alumni to have the opportunity to continue their education for one day in the spirit of lifelong learning and keeping the connection.”

 The schedule includes:

  • Strengths-based leadership with Associate Dean and leadership scholar Nance Lucas, PhD., including discussions based on the results of each participant's StrengthsFinder assessment (to be made available  in advance to all registrants), and the book Strengths Based Leadership, free to each participant.
  • A workshop led by NCC Assistant Professor Michael Gilmore, PhD.: Community-based biocultural conservation and sustainable development in a globalized world—a case study of the Maijuna, an indigenous group of the Peruvian Amazon.
  • SOMO Micro Lab (SOcial-eMOtional intelligence) In this innovative learning laboratory, we'll be exposed to the burgeoning research in Positive Psychology, the science of success and happiness.  We will discover how we’re genetically predisposed to negativity, and how switching this habit of thinking to something more positive takes intention, attention and effort.  Our colleague, Louis Alloro, M.Ed., MAPP will facilitate.

The day also includes lunch with NCC instructors at Blackstone’s, a private dining room within Mason’s award-winning Southside dining facility, optional yoga stretches led by instructor Brandice Rogers, an optional campus tour, and drop-in visits by several surprise guests (one of whom is green and furry). Breakfast will be available to those arriving from 9:30am-10:00am.
